Functional Testing

I use functional tests to gain a better understanding of what is going on in an individual's body's. The body is complex, testing is the most efficient way to pinpoint abnormalities, and allows the nutrition and lifestyle interventions to be tailored to the individual.

Most Functional medicine tests are not available on the NHS, and will come at an additional cost to you. I am, however, happy to review any test results you may have had done via your GP.

Some common functional tests that I use are listed bellow.

Gut Health Tests

  • GI Effects - Comprehensive Stool Profile

The GI Effects - This is a comprehensive Stool Profile. It combines a group of stool tests that provide immediate, actionable clinical information for the management of gastrointestinal health. It uses advanced technologies to assess digestive function, gut inflammation and the gut microbiome, including testing for the presence of parasites and other pathogenic organisms.

Hormone Testing

  • Complete Hormone Profile

This test is a urinary hormone profile suitable for in both male and females. This profile assesses parent hormones and their metabolites as well as key metabolic pathways, provides insight into the contribution that sex hormones may have with hormone-related complaints. It helps assess disease risk associated with elevated oestrogen metabolites.

  • Thyroid Panel

This test includes a complete profile of your thyroid hormones including TSH, T4, T3, reverseT3 and thyroid anti-bodies. Conventional tests offered by GPs typically test only TSH and T4 but a complete breakdown is required in order to understand and clinically help your subclinical thyroid symptoms. Symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, constipation, headaches, PMS, joint and muscle pain, coldness.

  • Cortisol Awakening & Adrenal Stress Profile (Saliva)

This test measures your Cortisol and DHEA levels and ratio between the 2 which are indicators of your metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and proteins, your blood sugar levels, and any inflammation. DHEA regulates body weight, blood pressure and immune function and is used to make testosterone and estradiol. Too much or too little of cortisol or DHEA can lead to many symptoms such as weight gain, insomnia and fatigue and it is important that they are balanced in order to resolve these symptoms.

Nutritional Status Tests

  • Metabolomix+

The Metabolomix+ is a unique combination of nutritional tests that provides an analysis of key nutritional biomarkers. It is a non-invasive, way to assess the functional need for antioxidants, B-vitamins, minerals, digestive support, fatty acids, and amino acids. It gives a great insight into and deficiencies that may be contributing to poor health.

  • Vitamin D

This is a convenient inexpensive at home blood prick test to determine your Vitamin D levels and to assess the need for supplementation. Vitamin D deficiency is common especially in people who are overweight and/or who have leaky gut and is linked with a number of common conditions I see in clinic including autoimmune hypothyroidism, cognitive disorders, immunity and blood sugar control.
